SIGNS OF VISUAL STRUGGLES WITH READING AND WRITING:

  • Skips or repeats lines / frequent loss of place

  • Mixing up letters

  • Poor comprehension

  • Excessive head movement when reading 

  • Use a finger to maintain place 

  • Short attention span

  • Below grade level in reading

  • Slow/difficult time reading

  • Poor handwriting / poor spacing

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS:

​

  • Headaches with near work 

  • Letters or words appear to move on the page 

  • Intermittent double vision

  • Closes or covers an eye

  • Difficulty copying from the board 

  • Complaints of blurred vision

    • Blurred vision when looking from board to book or book to board 

    • Hold things very close

  • Fatigue, frustration, stress associated with schoolwork/homework

  • Very intelligent but poor at school

  • Poor hand-eye coordination

VISUAL PERCEPTUAL DEFICITS MAY LEAD TO:

  • Difficulty learning right from left 

  • Letter reversals 

  • Poor processing speed

  • Confusion of likeness and minor differences

  • Difficulty determining what is significant from what is insignificant 

  • Difficulty visualizing what is read 

  • Difficulty learning new material

  • Poor spelling

  • Poor recall of visually presented material

  • Difficulty with tasks that require more than one step

  • Difficulty with math 

  • Responds well orally but not on paper 

  • Difficult to teach or failing to understand basic concepts 

SECONDARY SYMPTOMS:

  • Difficulty driving

  • Poor spatial judgment

  • General clumsiness and accident prone

  • Difficulty maintaining eye contact
